<image:caption>Skull with a lit cigarette by Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890). Oil on canvas on display in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. It was painted in 1886 while Van Gogh was taking a course on the baroque artist Pieter Paul Rubens at the Antwerp Art School. There is no evidence it was a statement about the effects of tobacco. He was a very heavy pipe smoker. Nevertheless, it would make a suitable illustration for a cancer society or a pulmonary disease society to highlight the relationship of smoking to premature death.</image:caption>

An Italian novelist, Carlo Collodi, wrote a classic children’s book, Le Avventure di Pinocchio (The Adventures of Pinocchio), published in the late 19th century. This book created the character. The elongating nose when fibbing was a Disney creation. The Disney film was a giant leap forward in animation and is a classic of that genre</image:caption>

<image:caption>This 1656 engraving by Gerhart Altzenbach depicts a plague doctor wearing the personal protective equipment of the time, derived from French doctor Charles De Lorme’s original design. MEDICAL HISTORY LIBRARY, HARVEY CUSHING/JOHN HAT WHITNEY MEDICAL LIBRARY, YALE UNIVERSITY An epidemic of plague in France in 1619 resulted in the first medical mask. A French doctor, Charles De Lorme, invented an early prototype of a hazmat suit, including a cape, boots, hat, and a strange bird-like mask. (Figure) Doctors used the stick to maintain an appropriate distance from their patients. The mask’s beak contained flowers, herbs, and ingredients such as viper flesh powder to purify the inhaled miasma; corrupt air thought to cause the disease. This concept predated the germ theory of illness. Miasma was the period’s explanation of the source for what were infectious diseases. The plague swept through Western Europe, and the outfit remained in use for more than a century. Medical professionals wore it during 1656 outbreaks in Italy, the 1665 London Plague, and the Great Plague of Marseille in 1720. Not surprisingly, the mask was mocked as useless. Since the death rate was circa 30%, futility prevailed. However, Dr. De Lorme instinctively had the right idea.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Fig. 1. Normal male Karyotype. During the mitotic phase of the cell mitotic cycle chromosomes are separated and spread out and can be individually identified. For analysis, they are cut out, digitally, and the 22 autosomes are arrayed in pairs from largest to smallest with the two sex chromosomes following: either XX in females or XY in males. This array is called a karyotype and is a key technique of analyzing the chromosomes of cells in persons with malignancies or with abnormalities that are related to chromosome disorders, such as Down syndrome.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Terminal Digit Preference</image:title>
<image:caption>Figure 1. There are three types of sphygmomanometer; mercury, aneroid, and digital. This figure is of a manual aneroid sphygmomanometer. The rubber pump is used to raise the cuff pressure above the patient’s systolic pressure and then the pressure is released by unscrewing slowly the small valve at the base of the rubber bulb. The operator has to read the pressure indicator of a rapidly descending needle to coincide with the pulse sound at the antecubital fossa (crease of the arm) heard through a stethoscope. One has to coordinate the appearance and disappearance of the pulse sounds heard through the stethoscope with the location of the descending needle on the gauge. This ear-eye coordination is usually done hurriedly and perfunctorily by many observers making the blood pressure an approximation. The scale on the gauge, highlighting intervals of 20 mm of pressure, e.g. 100, 80, 60, etc. usually results in rounding to zeros or five, if that number seems closer to the appearance or disappearance of the Korotkoff sound, as the needle passes by the numbers. Based on the studies cited(3) and personal experience, approximation is usually represented by an even number or zero or five, usually zero.(3)</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Terminal Digit Preference</image:title>
<image:caption>Figure 1B. A digital blood pressure measurement instrument. Note that the terminal digit on the readout is not an approximation but an actual number with the terminal digits representing a more precise measurement of blood pressure. Here the blood pressure is 127 over 63 and the pulse 62 beats per minute. The expected probability of a terminal digit of 0, 1, 2, 3 . . . through 9 is approximately 10% in each case, if recorded digitally.(3)</image:caption>

<image:caption>This gold medal is given to each laureate in literature. Each medal has one face that bears a profile of Alfred Nobel with his name and the date of his birth and death inscribed; the alternative side is unique to the discipline being honored. The medal for literature shows a young man sitting beneath a laurel tree listening to, and writing down, the song of the muse. The inscription on the edge is adapted from Virgil’s Aeneid. In English, it states “It is beneficial to have improved (human) life through discovered arts.” The medal is now made of 18 carat green gold and plated with 24 carat pure gold.
